How low-code AI is turning IT departments into strategic powerhouses

Low-code AI and machine learning tools are quietly transforming the way IT teams operate, shifting them from reactive support functions to proactive, data-driven enablers of business value. With greater accessibility, reduced complexity, and minimal reliance on data scientists, these tools are helping organisations unlock the hidden intelligence within their infrastructure.

Across every sector, analytics has become the foundation of digital transformation. Organisations now invest heavily in tools to understand customer behaviour, financial performance, marketing effectiveness, and supply chain efficiency. But the engine that drives all these functions, enterprise IT, often remains untouched by the same analytical intelligence. While business units embrace data-driven decisions, IT operations continue to rely on reactive workflows, siloed monitoring tools, and instinct-based problem solving.

This imbalance is neither accidental nor trivial. As Rakesh Jayaprakash, Chief Analytics Evangelist at ManageEngine, explains, “When organisations think about analytics, the focus tends to be on business departments that generate revenue. The IT department manages the infrastructure enabling all of this, but it rarely uses analytics to understand or optimise its operations.”

The result is a disconnect that limits both strategic oversight and day-to-day effectiveness. IT generates vast volumes of data from endpoints, servers, networks and applications. Yet, as Jayaprakash notes, “Much of this data goes unused. It is there, but it is not being interrogated. The focus has been elsewhere for so long that IT has become reactive rather than proactive.”

This is beginning to change. A new generation of low-code AI and machine learning platforms gives frontline IT staff the ability to analyse, predict and act without needing to code, hire data scientists or overhaul their architecture. The implications are significant, particularly for industries where technical resources are scarce but operational demands are relentless.

Reclaiming operational data

Most organisations recognise IT as the backbone of modern business. However, few treat it as a domain that can benefit from advanced analytics in the same way as customer service or sales. Jayaprakash describes this as a fundamental oversight. “There is so much scope for organisations to improve IT operations by analysing their own data,” he says. “The challenge has always been accessibility. Traditional data analysis has been the domain of specialists.”

Low-code AI platforms are changing this dynamic. These tools allow users to feed in operational data, identify patterns and generate predictions without writing code or understanding complex algorithms. “It is like having an extra team member whose job is to learn from the past and apply those learnings to the present,” Jayaprakash explains.

This shift means analytics is no longer confined to centralised teams with specialist skills. Instead, it becomes part of the everyday toolkit for IT technicians and infrastructure managers. More importantly, it allows those closest to the systems to build models directly relevant to their operational reality. “The people who know the systems best are now empowered to ask the right questions and get accurate, interpretable answers,” Jayaprakash adds.

From firefighting to forecasting

One of the most valuable applications of low-code AI in IT is the ability to move from reactive troubleshooting to proactive optimisation. This transition is not simply about improving uptime or reducing ticket volumes. It is about shifting the mindset of IT teams from a support function to a strategic enabler.

Jayaprakash highlights the example of capacity planning. “IT teams need to ensure that infrastructure can scale to support business growth,” he says. “Low-code AI tools allow them to build forecasting models that go beyond historical trends. They can include new product launches, entry into new markets or anticipated customer growth.”

This leads to more accurate resource provisioning. Overprovisioning results in a wasted budget, while underprovisioning leads to performance bottlenecks and customer frustration. With low-code AI, IT teams can model scenarios and make informed decisions based on accurate data.

Another area of application is patch management. “Let us say an organisation deploys security patches across thousands of endpoints,” Jayaprakash says. “By analysing historical patterns, the AI can determine the best day and time for maximum success. For example, some organisations find that patches deployed on Fridays are more successful because users are more willing to restart their machines before the weekend. These are insights that only come from analysing real operational data.” These models do not replace human judgment. Instead, they augment it, allowing teams to deploy resources, prioritise tasks and measure outcomes with far greater precision.

The cost and complexity equation

In many industries, especially manufacturing and healthcare, IT departments are under intense pressure to deliver more with less. Hiring skilled analysts is expensive, and building AI infrastructure requires upfront investment. Low-code platforms offer a third path: affordable, scalable, and user-friendly.

Jayaprakash acknowledges that there is an initial investment, especially for organisations that prefer on-premise deployments for data security. “Some customers want to keep their data within their own premises,” he says. “That means investing in infrastructure to run the models. But others are comfortable using cloud-based platforms, which allows them to pay only for the data they analyse.”

This flexibility is key. SaaS models provide a way for organisations that are cautious about cost or uncertain about how to begin to trial low-code AI without significant capital expenditure. Once the value is demonstrated, they can scale usage or move to hybrid models that suit their compliance and security requirements.

Importantly, the simplicity of low-code tools removes another traditional barrier to AI adoption: the need for extensive training. “These platforms are designed for self-service,” Jayaprakash continues. “Users do not need to write statistical functions or scripts. They point the platform to the right data and define the parameters. The model generates predictions based on what it observes.”

Challenges of integration and perception

Despite the promise of low-code AI, adoption is not automatic. Many organisations face an initial hurdle: overcoming the perception that analytics and machine learning are too complex or too advanced for non-specialists. “There is still an intimidation factor,” Jayaprakash says. “People assume that building models or generating insights will be difficult, even though the tools are designed to be intuitive. Once they start, they realise it is not as complicated as they feared. But that initial resistance can be a real barrier.”

Another challenge is ensuring that use cases are clearly defined. Not every problem requires machine learning. In some cases, traditional analytics is sufficient. Jayaprakash advises executives to begin with specific pain points. “The first step is to ask what problem we are trying to solve,” he advises. “Is it about reducing incident response time? Improving patch success rates? Forecasting server load? Once the goal is clear, it is easier to choose the right tool.”

He also notes the importance of data quality. “The outputs from any model are only as good as the data that goes in,” he continues. “Organisations must focus on data hygiene and ensure they feed clean, relevant data into the models. Otherwise, the insights will be misleading or unusable.”

Balancing accessibility with analytical depth

There is a common concern among executives that low-code tools, while accessible, may lack the depth needed for complex analysis. Jayaprakash acknowledges the tension between simplicity and sophistication but sees it as a design challenge rather than a limitation. “It is true that if you want to democratise analysis, you must make the tools simple,” he admits. “But that does not mean shallow. The depth of insight depends on the richness of the data and the way the problem is defined. The more parameters users provide, the more precise and powerful the model becomes.

“In practice, most organisations do not require deep customisation for most IT challenges. Eighty per cent of use cases can be addressed through self-service. These include performance monitoring, incident forecasting, service level analysis and capacity planning. The remaining 20 per cent may need expert support to tweak the model or integrate third-party tools. But that is a small subset.”

Over time, users tend to become more ambitious. They begin applying the tools to more advanced scenarios as they gain confidence and see results from their initial efforts. “The learning curve is steep at first, but it flattens quickly,” Jayaprakash explains. “The real depth comes once users understand how the models respond and start experimenting with more complex data sets.”

Strategic guidance for executives

For senior leaders evaluating low-code AI for their organisations, the path to value lies in realism, prioritisation and iteration. Jayaprakash advises starting with a clear goal and a realistic understanding of what the tools can deliver. “Sometimes, the expectations around AI are too high,” he says. “There is a belief that it will solve everything instantly. It takes time to prepare the data, define the use case and tune the models. But the value quickly becomes clear once that foundation is in place.”

Executives should also consider whether the problems they face genuinely require machine learning. In many cases, existing analytics capabilities may be sufficient. Jayaprakash suggests a phased approach. “Start with something simple, demonstrate the value, then expand. Do not aim to transform everything at once.”

Another key factor is organisational culture. Low-code AI works best when teams are empowered to explore and solve problems themselves. Centralised control may be necessary for compliance or governance, but flexibility at the operational level is essential for adoption.

Finally, there is the issue of scale. Organisations must evaluate whether their chosen platform can grow with them, support different deployment models and integrate with their existing IT ecosystem. Many platforms now offer APIs, connectors and customisation options that allow them to be embedded into larger operational workflows.

A shift in posture, not just a process

The real significance of low-code AI in IT operations is not just technological. It represents a shift in posture from reactive support to proactive strategy. It enables IT teams to move beyond incident response and begin contributing to business optimisation and risk reduction.

Jayaprakash sees this as a cultural transformation. “When IT teams start using analytics to guide their actions, they are no longer just keeping the lights on,” he says. “They are helping to drive efficiency, improve performance and reduce risk. That changes the way they are perceived within the organisation.”

The opportunity is clear for senior executives. Low-code platforms offer a way to unlock value from existing data, empower technical teams, and improve operational resilience. By bringing analytics into the heart of IT, organisations can create systems that respond to problems and anticipate them.

This is not a revolution built on hype. It is a quiet shift rooted in pragmatism, driven by necessity, and made possible by tools that prioritise usability without compromising power.
