Partnership powers the next generation of AI-driven smart factories

Cognizant has announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deliver advanced AI and cloud-based solutions aimed at revolutionising manufacturing processes for major industries, including automotive, life sciences, and consumer goods. The collaboration underscores Cognizant’s commitment to transforming factory operations at scale by harnessing the power of generative AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud technologies to create more efficient, data-driven manufacturing environments.

The expanded collaboration between Cognizant and AWS comes as industries increasingly turn to smart manufacturing technologies to tackle supply chain challenges and meet evolving compliance standards. Cognizant’s offerings, now enhanced by AWS’s cutting-edge cloud infrastructure, will focus on Industry 4.0 applications such as digital twins, simulations, and manufacturing execution systems, along with critical cybersecurity solutions for operational technology. Cognizant plans to showcase these technologies at its manufacturing innovation centres in the United States and India.

Anna Elango, Cognizant’s Executive Vice President and head of Core Technologies and Insights emphasised the importance of adopting AI-driven methods for companies looking to navigate today’s manufacturing landscape. “The businesses that will succeed in an era of AI-driven disruption, supply chain challenges, and evolving compliance requirements will be those that embrace smart manufacturing methods at the core of their production operations,” she said. She noted that Cognizant’s expertise in IoT, AI, and automation, combined with AWS’s robust platform, would allow clients to drive quality, efficiency, and flexibility while reducing costs.

Cognizant will advise clients on implementing and managing smart manufacturing solutions, such as modernizing OT systems, updating networks with industrial data platforms, and deploying autonomous plant operations tools. These tools, powered by generative AI, will provide real-time insights into production, facilitate predictive maintenance, and support data-driven decision-making.

AWS General Manager for Automotive and Manufacturing, Ozgur Tohumcu, highlighted the hurdles companies face in adopting smart manufacturing solutions, such as high costs and technical complexity. “To unlock the value of smart manufacturing, companies have typically had to contend with a lack of standardized technical protocols, high upfront costs, complex technology, and limited accessibility,” he said. He explained that the combined expertise of Cognizant and AWS would offer manufacturers the support they need to implement smart manufacturing effectively.

One example of Cognizant’s success in smart manufacturing is its work with Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer. Gleverson Lemos, Embraer’s Head of Industry 4.0, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “We have worked with AWS and with Cognizant, and it is great to see the two partners join forces to deliver additional value to the clients through their strategic collaboration around smart manufacturing solutions.”

The collaboration leverages AWS’s Industrial Data Fabric (IDF) and Cognizant’s Asset Performance Excellence (APEx) accelerator, both of which aim to enhance manufacturing outcomes. Cognizant’s generative AI tools, for instance, enable plant managers and engineers to access detailed guidance for troubleshooting and maintenance, integrating real-time data to streamline processes and address issues proactively.

As industries continue to adopt digital transformation at an accelerated pace, the Cognizant-AWS partnership provides manufacturers with a pathway to greater flexibility and efficiency, reducing operational hurdles and unlocking new business value through smart manufacturing.
